Fractional laser treatment

With fractional laser therapy we can repair skin tissue damage in a very controlled and effective way, making your skin gradually stronger and smoother over the long term. The iPixel Erbium Yag puts the laser pulses into particles or fractions very close together perpendicular to the skin. The laser beams penetrate deep into the dermis like tiny columns of heat beams. In this way, the heat beams stimulate the connective tissue cells to produce new collagen, new skin support tissue. The skin around the laser pulses remains intact and so this healthy tissue can help repair damaged tissue at an accelerated pace. Due to the production of new connective tissue, relief and colour differences gradually become less visible.

The Treatment

Depending on the size of the surface, the treatment takes 30 to 45 minutes. The skin therapist marks out the skin area. Then she gives a few milliseconds of pulses next to each other with the laser, until the whole area is accurately treated. You will feel warm pricks on the skin. The pulses are short in duration. Before the treatment, an emla cream can be applied that anaesthetises the skin, this makes the treatment bearable. Pain relief is usually not necessary. After the treatment we cool the skin again and apply soothing cream and sunscreen.

Aftercare

Immediately after treatment the treated area is light red and swollen, this can last for several hours to three days. After a few days, the skin may show a tanned colour and a light, dry scaling in the form of tiny dots. This is the pattern of the laser pulses and is barely visible to others. Pigmentation spots that may have been treated will first darken and flake off within a week. Some people experience extra bleeding and an itchy feeling in the treated area. This is part of the regeneration process and means that the skin is 'at work'.

Can you do sunbathing after a fractional laser treatment?

We recommend not exposing the skin of the area to be treated to sun, tanning or self-tanning for at least four weeks prior to treatment. The skin is recovering and is more vulnerable to sunlight if you do not follow this advice then complications such as pigmentation spots or depigmentation may occur. It is therefore a treatment that is usually carried out in winter. The skin therapist always advises to use an SPF 50 during the period that this treatment is carried out.

Can a fractional laser induce cold sores?

With reduced resistance or heat from the laser it can happen that you get a cold sore if you are familiar with it. If you are sensitive to the outbreak of a cold sore, it is advisable to use L-Lysine supplements two weeks prior to the treatment.
